Process Blog: Still Life Oil Painting 3/2/20-Present

Day 1: I created an array for the still life before creating a charcoal sketch and then erasing it lightly to begin my brunaille under painting. I'm happy with the composition, although a concern I have is setting it up daily. Since there isn't anything inside the gas mask to keep it in the same shape, its folds and shadows will change daily.

Day 2: I revised my array by swapping the deck of cards for a statue wearing the gas mask. This fixes the problems I mentioned before, and, to me at least, is just a better composition with a more interesting set of objects. I've begun my under painting and have lightly applied some glazes of raw umber. I think I'm doing well, although the rims of the gas mask seem to be a bit off and everything is a bit too bright. I don't want to go overboard however.

Day 3: I've further worked on my under painting, really focusing on where the darkest shadows and colors are. I think I've done well so far, but I might go back and bring out some of my mid tones with some turpentine by removing paint. I've also begun adding highlights, but haven't had a chance to add too many. There aren't many bright spots aside from the rims of the gas mask and the decorative mask on the left, so I need to be careful of going overboard with the titanium white.
